Game Design

The first reading that i set out and read was, What is a game Anyway?

- I enjoyed this reading but it my opinion i didn't agree with some of it, When Ian the writer of the article was talking about how games should be defined with words and not compared with other games.

If you go onto Steam, which is an online game store for computer gaming. On every game there is a list of tags that tells you whats included in the game its self. i will show an example below.

As you can see you can see to the right there is a list of tags that players of the game can add and if they are popular tags they are displayed on the games home page.

Reading two : The organic nature of game ideation

There was defiantly some valid points in this reading.
I strongly agree with the thought that brainstorming is necessary when it comes to making a good game!

Game designers will always be needed when it comes to making games I don’t think any sort of AI software will take over as they will never be as creative as group of humans working together.

It’s clear from the reading that the more experience the game designer has, the better quality the game will be!
But that’s not to say that an inexperienced game designer won’t make a great game all it takes is just one good idea, but with more game design experience there will be less bad ideas.

To create a good game the whole game design team needs to be on the same page so that’s why they all need to work together to create one great idea for a new game that they can create.

As this reading was conducted from 2005 to 2007 and I would like to see how games are created these days in 2020. I wonder if there is still game developers that have brainstorming sessions or is it all automated and done by computers.

Reading three : Four Basic Methods for Generating Ideas.

Techniques - Concentration, Brainstorming, Scamper, Ramsey.

Concentration - The idea behind the concentration technique is that being in the same environment you will come up with the same ideas that you always do,
Where If you’re in a different environment that you are unfamiliar  with you will come up with better ideas.

Brainstorming - this is the most common technique and you need is a group of like minded people who want to create a game, make two groups one for Participants and one for The Commission.
There is threee stages to brainstorming.
1. Statement of the Task
2. Generation of Ideas
3. Grouping and Selection

Scamper -  This is a technique that’s build up with other techniques inside it.
There is 7 techniques and if they take every first letter out of the techniques you get the word SCAMPER.
1. Substitute
2. Combine
3. Adapt
4. Modify
5. Put
6. Eliminate
7. Reverse

The Ramsey Method - This is the most difficult technique of them all. This technique will be very helpful to anyone that has to create a game about a very specific topic.
The method is that you collect the maximum amount of information on the topic that you need to assemble the game, you study that data looking for connection and connotations untill the concept of this game is collected from these pieces.

Overall I really enjoyed all of the readings and I am looking forward to reading into more articles about the game design world!

  1. Hi Darragh! I was reading your post and I like what I read. You explained the three papers very well and stated different techniques and explained what each were and what you do for them from the third paper which was very well done. You also stated your opinions about your overall experience which I also like. Very well done :)

  3. Hi Darragh, great blog post! It was very clear and easy to read which is always a good start. I have to say you described and summarised all three papers very well, and it was great that you gave some of your personal opinions as well. This made it a lot more interesting to read hearing your own opinions. I'm glad you enjoyed the readings.
